Because nitrous oxide is a mild sedative, it is safe to administer to children.
During your consultation, Dr. Nguyen will review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for dental sedation. You should inform Dr. Nguyen of any medical conditions you have or medications that you take, and let him know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
To prepare for the administration of nitrous oxide, you will need to fast for 2 hours leading up to the appointment to reduce the risk of nausea.
We will place a gas mask over your nose and a flow of oxygen and nitrous oxide will flow through. As you inhale, you will quickly feel the onset of the sedative’s effects such as relaxation. Once the sedative has taken full effect, Dr. Nguyen can begin your dental treatment.
Once your dental treatment has been complete, we will remove all remnants of nitrous oxide from your lungs by flowing pure oxygen through the mask. Within a few minutes, the effects of the sedative will wear off and you may not remember the procedure.
Nitrous oxide effectively relaxes patients to rid them of anxiety and stress while alleviating any sensations of pain. In addition to these effects, this sedative can also suppress strong gag reflexes and help patients who are restless or struggle to keep their mouths open for long periods cooperate for longer procedures.
Nitrous oxide is the mildest and safest sedative available in dentistry, making it accessible to patients of all ages. Laughing gas also does not cause lingering side effects. This means that within minutes of ceasing the flow of nitrous oxide, patients will return to normal and can even drive home from their appointment.
The fast-acting nature of this sedative also reduces wait times and enables the dentist to perform more dental work in less time. Other sedatives take much longer to kick in. Another benefit of nitrous oxide is its temporary amnesic effect which causes the patient to forget the dental appointment. This is great for reducing future dental anxiety in these patients.
If you suffer from dental anxiety, it’s important to inform your dentist. Dr. Anthony Nguyen can listen to your worries and offer you reassurance and information about your dental treatment to put you at ease.
If you inform Dr. Nguyen of your dental anxiety, he can administer dental sedation so you feel relaxed during your dental treatment, even if you’re just coming in for routine cleaning.
We also have mounted TVs in all of our operatories so you can distract yourself or stay entertained during your appointment. Dr. Nguyen will always put patient comfort first so do not hesitate to communicate your feelings or concerns so we can help you feel at ease.
Nitrous oxide can relieve fear caused by intense phobias such as trypanophobia (the fear of needles).
